1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter AU55 PCGS. Breen-1089, Newman 1-C, Hodder 1-A.3, R.3. Early dollar specialists like to include this famous issue in their collections as representative of the first dollar-size pieces produced on behalf of the American Congress. Besides its intense and striking symbolism and its fairly direct link to later Colonial and early federal issues, the Continental dollars are extremely popular as the only 1776-dated Colonial (or, more accurately, pre-federal) pieces. The chain device on the reverse is a pictorial representation of "E Pluribus Unum," Latin for "Out of Many, One," the first national motto, which stresses the individuality of the states but relegates the greater power to their union. And if there were any doubt, each state is represented by a single round link in the chain and identified as such, but the central round device, ringed by AMERICAN CONGRESS and the sun's rays, states WE ARE ONE.
The sundial on the obverse, with FUGIO, "I fly" in Latin, and MIND YOUR BUSINESS beneath, is the prototypical American proverb in graphic form: "work is good, lazy is bad," "mind your own business," "idle hands are the Devil's workshop," "early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise," "all work and no play makes jack," "the early bird gets the worm," "make hay while the sun shines," the list goes on and on.
Struck in pewter, this piece has typical light to medium gray surfaces, somewhat lighter in color on the reverse. Most of the design elements are boldly defined, although portions of the outer ring on the obverse are sadly absent, above the date and below CURE. Some peripheral weakness is evident on the reverse and both sides have minor scrapes and bruises. Despite these issues, this piece retains considerable luster and presents an attractive appearance.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
