1773<1/2P> Virginia Halfpenny, No Period MS64 Brown PCGS. Breen-181, Newman 4-O. Seven Harpstrings. Struck on a wide, 26.3 mm. planchet, per the Eliasberg catalog. Although designated as Brown, ample bright gold color outlines the legends and device recesses, and complements the predominant chocolate-brown toning. A sharply struck and pleasing example of this late Colonial issue. A trace of carbon near the chin and a minor mark on the King's hair are of little concern. The reverse die appears to be failing near 10:30. Probably among the finest examples of this die marriage, not represented in the recent Ford Part 7 auction. Listed on page 43 of the 2006 Guide Book.
Ex: Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 41.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
