1772/3 Philadelphia Furniture Maker “James Gillingham” and Mayor “John Gibson” Signed Debt Sworn Statement
JAMES GILLINGHAM (born 1736), Noted Philadelphia Furniture Maker and active from 1765-1770 in the Chippendale Style. JOHN GIBSON (1740-1782), 57th Major of Philadelphia for two terms (1771-1773).
February 23, 1773-Dated, Manuscript Document Signed, “James Gillingham” (three times), for an unpaid invoiced debt, measuring 8” x 4.5”, 1 page, written on both sides, City of Philadelphia, Fine. Original signed invoice for “3 High Post Beds and 3 Jacken Bottoms” Being a sworn statement, “City of Philadelphia ...came before me James Gillingham and on his Solemn Affirmation (he being one of the People called Quakers) did declare and say the within ammount against Elizabeth Ray is just and true ammounting to Seven pounds ten Shillings which remains unpaid. In Testemony whereof I have herewith set my Hand and Seal Affirmed before John Gibson Mayor”. Paper and red wax seal fully intact at the upper left. Docket is extensive on the reverse, well written in bold brown ink on period laid paper. A rare document signed by both the famed Philadelphia furniture maker “James Gillingham,” plus “John Gibson” Philadelphia’s 57th Mayor (1771-1773)!
John Gibson, was born May 23, 1740, and died after 1782. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On October 15, 1757, he married Ann Ball in Christ Church, Philadelphia.
