will fight only for the union and the constitution
Sgt. Major George Drecher, 176th PA, writes to his brother in Stroudsburg, PA. War-date ALS, 6pp, 12mo, Beaufort, SC, Apr 23, 1863. With original cover. Recovering from “South Carolina distemper,” Drecher writes that he thinks he “can stand the climate now let her come as hot as she may.” He writes of the slowness and inconsistency of mail delivery and provides news of friends. Drecher describes the difference in pay schedule between drafted men and substitutes, who don’t like to be paid later. “We have about 600 men in the Regt. all told including officers. How much money do you suppose it took to pay the Regt. 4½ Months, only $50,000...this is for ½ of our 9 Months...” He informs his brother that “Charleston is to be taken again, they are making preparations for it...It does not appear to me as though we came down here to fight & do not feel any more in danger than if at home, cannot tell why our Regt. is kept out of the Battle Field yet it [is] so. We consider ourselves as good fighting men as Uncle Abraham has in his Gallant Armee, but when we fight will have it understood that it must be for the Union as it was & the Constitution & not for the freedom of Niggers & that only ‘won’t go down’ with us fellows. About a month or so since Major Schoonover volunteered to head a Mob on the day that we would return to Stroudsburg to go in (as he termed it) ‘for Gutting’ Old Esq. printing Office out. Several of the same stripe that he is...agreed to go into it & it was all the talk for a few days, soon died away...is confidential between you & I...” Boldly penned. Fine example.
