1766 FARTH Pitt Farthing VF30 Corroded Uncertified.
1766 FARTH Pitt Farthing VF30 Corroded Uncertified.<p>Speaking before Parliament in January 1766 in defense of American colonists, Sir William Pitt stated: "...as subjects [the colonists] are entitled to the common right of representation, and cannot be bound to pay taxes without their consent." Hailed as a savior in the colonists' struggle against the hated Stamp Act, William Pitt was honored on several locally made coins and medals. Most often found in the Halfpenny format, Farthing sized examples of this Colonial commemorative were struck on cast planchets of brass or copper and are a particularly rare item. This example is dark brown in color with scattered pitting in the fields and a pinched rim just above 9 o'clock. The strike is somewhat irregular on the reverse.
