1765 French Colonies Stampee, Overstruck on a 1749 Sous Marques. Vlack 374. Rarity-6. Fine or so, a Crowned C countermark stamped onto the reverse of a Sous Marques which had seen much circulation, the host coin dated 1749, and the fox different on the reverse showing it to be from the Paris mint, making the original coin an example of Vlack 29 – a Rarity-8 variety! Medium brown, lightly rough surfaces as is often the case with this type. This example was purchased from Robert Vlack prior to the sale of his collection, and comes with his original envelope where he identifies the host coin as dated 1740, though there is a clear tail on the final digit and the date is 1749, which is one of the rarer dates in the Sous series. A pleasing example of this recycled coinage, which Vlack noted that for over a decade “was the soul of small change among the colonies.” While originally intended just for Cayenne, this issue circulated throughout the French Colonies in the West Indies – and even in some of the British colonies in the area, as some are known further countermarked for circulation there!
