REV. MR KENNETH MACAULAY

1st EDITION

LONDON, PRINTED FOR T. BECKET AND P. A. DE HONDT

1764

1st Edition. 8vo (22.5cm) pp.(6), iv,[5]-278, folding map opposite title page. Original untrimmed example in marbled boards with paper spine, titled in ink. Crowned armorial bookplate with motto 'Honi Soit qui Mal Y Pense.’ to front pastedown. Housed in a maroon pebble-grain cloth box with gilt titles to spine. There is rubbing to the original binding, but it is holding very firm. Some light foxing throughout, but no dark toning. Map is good.

A very pleasing copy in an original binding and boxed. The authorship of this rare work has long been contested. When Dr Samuel Johnson met Rev. Macaulay at his Cawdor manse in 1773, he complemented him on a "very pretty piece of topography". Subsequently however Johnson remarked to James Boswell that "there is a combination in it of which Macaulay is not capable." When they visited Skye it was confirmed that the work had been written by Dr John M'Pherson, minister of Sleat, from material collected by Macaulay on his visit to St Kilda in 1758.
