1764 “Isaac Low” Receipt Signed to Royal Navy Captain Archibald Kennedy Captain of the Ship H.M.S. Coventry
ISAAC LOW (1735-1791). First to sign the Articles of Association (April 29, 1775) giving an impassioned speech against the King and British Parliament, American Revolution era merchant and politician from New York, Delegate to the First Continental Congress, yet was against Independence, arrested for treason in 1776, he was protected in New York by Sir Guy Carleton until he fled to England at War's end, losing all of his American properties.
June 12, 1764-Dated French & Indian War Period, Autograph Document Signed, “Isaac Low”, 1 page, 8” x 5”, at New York, Very Fine. Being a Handwritten receipt issued to Royal Navy Captain Archibald Kennedy, then Captain of the ship H.M.S. Coventry, guaranteeing the security of 35 pounds paid for "shore hire." Expected even wear and slight tone and splitting at folds reinforced with easily removable stamp hinge material, being boldly penned on clean laid period paper and quite attractive. While commanding the ship Coventry only a few months later in November, Captain Kennedy would refuse to take aboard the hated British “Tax Stamps” when threatened with destruction during the widespread American protests of the infamous “Stamp Act.” Fearing the safety of his own property in New York City, Kennedy would actually close the Port of New York until the contentious issue was resolved. Very scarce.
Sir Guy Carleton was Commander of British troops during the American War of Independence, specifically leading the defense during the Battle of Quebec. In 1782, Carleton was also responsible for the safe removal of the Loyal British Tories, and freed Slaves who had joined and sided with the British.
