1762 Governor SIR FRANCIS BERNARD French + Indian War Military Appointment
Colonial America
"Fra.(ncis) Bernard" Signed Important French and Indian War Military Appointment as Royal American Colonial Governor
SIR FRANCIS BERNARD (1712-1779). British Royal American Colonial Governor of New Jersey and Massachusetts-Bay during the French and Indian War who felt it his Royal duty to the King to enforce the hated Stamp Act and other laws the American colonists found objectionable.
February 2, 1762-Dated uncommon French and Indian War Period, Military Document Signed, "Fra.(ncis) Bernard" as Captain General and Governor in Chief, Boston, MA, Fine. Also Signed by Jno. Cotton as Secretary. This large impressive 16.25" x 13" ornately presented Document appoints Francis Brown as Lieutenant of the 5th Military Company of Foot in the town of Newbury. This Document is lightly toned overall and has been archivally taped on the verso along the fold lines, the horizontal centerfold being more heavily worn. The original wax and paper seal is intact and in good condition. Francis Bernard’s signature is particularly bold and accomplished in a deep, dark ink measuring about 3” long at upper left, directly below the Embossed Paper and Red Wax Seal. Overall, an uncommon, impressive large ornately engraved and typeset Document worthy of framing for display.
Sir Francis Bernard was educated at Oxford and was called to the bar in 1737. As Colonial Governor of New Jersey (1758-60), he did much to promote colonial solidarity and to build defense in the French and Indian Wars. Transferred to the governorship of Massachusetts, he lost popularity there because he felt it his duty to enforce the Stamp Act and other laws the colonists found objectionable. In 1769 he was recalled to England. An amateur architect, he was the designer of Harvard Hall at Harvard.
