1760 1/2P Hibernia-Voce Populi Halfpenny, VOOE POPULI MS64 Brown PCGS. Z. 7-E, N. 3, R.3. A gorgeous chocolate-brown near-Gem with an uncommonly sharp strike and splendidly smooth surfaces. Flawless aside from minor reverse rim imperfections near 4 o'clock. The single-finest certified example of this Guide Book-listed engraving blunder. The C in VOCE is cut over an O. In its Stack's catalog appearance, the present piece was described as "among the finest known" and "finer than Taylor ... and Norweb." The Goldbergs described it as "better than the Garrett or Norweb examples, as well as ... Roper." To this we can add that it is also finer than the Ford-Boyd-Ryder example. Listed on page 47 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (1/08).
Ex: James A.
