<B>1757 French and Indian War Newspaper.</B></I> Two pages, 9" x 15", Boston, Massachusetts, April 11, 1757. An incredible eyewitness account of the Battle at Fort William Henry between the French and Indians against the English in the <I>Boston and Country Gazette Journal</B></I> on April 11, 1757. The largest and most significant of the "Colonial Wars", started by fur traders and land speculators wanting to expand beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Although British soldiers bore the brunt of the fighting and Britain had paid most of the cost of this war, the contentious relationship between British and American soldiers sowed the seeds for the beginning of the American Revolution a decade later. Great newspaper featuring an account of a battle at Fort William Henry. The article is based on a written eyewitness account bearing the date the 26th of March. It reads in part: "on Saturday the 19th, at one o'clock in the morning, a noise was heardand a light seenwhich gave the alarm. Two hours after this, the enemy made their approach on the icethe Garrison made a smart fire of artillery and small arms which obliged the enemy to retreat. The enemy then made two feveral attempts to set fire to our sloops and bateaus (flat bottom boats with tapering ends), but were prevented: at break of day they withdrewof the enemies that were made prisoners, according to some their army consisted of 1650 [soldiers] and according to others in upwards of 2000on the 20th they made an attempt with their whole army to storm the place, but were again drove back, whereupon they set fire to two sloops, and burnt almost all of our bateaus; and at day-light withdrew."
