1746 Boston Receipt for Sale of a Slave Boy Named Prince
March 7, 1746-Dated Early Colonial Massachusetts, Manuscript Slave Sale Document Signed, 1 page, measuring about 7.5” x 12”, Very Fine.

This very early and rare Slave Sale Document is dated March 7, 1746 from Suffolk County, Massachusetts-Bay. It states that a thirteen-year-old Negro boy a Slave named Prince, was sold by Jonathan Dwight of Boston, to George Leonard of Norton, MA. He was sold for one hundred and fifty pounds old tenure and the signature was witnessed by Josiah Brewer and William Richardson. Prince was sold in Suffolk County and transferred to Bristol County, in which he probably didn't know anyone, which must have been very hard for the boy. This document has been handwritten in dark rich brown period ink on period laid paper with the original red wax seal still attached. Some slight separation at the centerfold which is only on the edge. Massachusetts and New England Slave sale related documents are difficult to find.
