1742 Map of Louisiana and the Mississippi River by Delisle with the First Published Map Reference to a Later “Texas”
1742, Handcolored Historic Map titled, “Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi,” by Guillaume Delisle, Published by Jean Covens and Corneille Mortier in Amsterdam from the 1718 Second State, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is the historic Map by Covens and Mortier is the 1742 version after Delisle's famous 1718 Louisiana Map, having yellow and red Hand-colored borders and outlines. It beautifully details the French possession of Louisiana all the way to the East coast, inclusive of the British American Colonies. When published, it was the first highly detailed map of the Gulf region and of the Mississippi, also showing the explorations of De Soto, etc. It measures 25.5” x 21.5” matted for display. It is in beautiful condition, with just a trivial bit of foxing at the lower right margin away from the designs. This impressive map does show “Mission de los Teijas” which was the First Published Map Reference to what would become “Texas.” This map was also the first to show the course of De Soto through his explorations of America.
