1740 Ornate Copperplate Engraved Map with Portraits of British Admirals “Robert Blake” & “Edward Vernon, Esq.”
1740-Dated, Copperplate Engraved Map titled “A New Map or Chart of the Western or Atlantic Ocean, with part of Europe Africa & America:Showing the Course of the Galleons, Flota & c. to and from the West Indies.” by E. Bowen, Printed in London, Very Fine.
This interesting historical Map measuring 12.25" x 14.25", shows the many different routes or tracts taken by ships and galleons; for instance, sailing from Havana to Old Spain, from England to the West Indies, or from Old Spain to Cartagena & the Havana. Engraved at top within nice large engraved cameos are the portraits of "Robert Blake, Admiral of England &c. 1650" and "Edward Vernon, Esq., Vice Admiral of the Blue 1740."

The left side shows land parts of Newfoundland, the Caribee Islands, and South America with Boston, Philadelphia, Jamestown, Charlestown, Savana, and St. Augusta printed in-between. The right side shows Great Britain to Africa land parts, and is printed: "The best account of these Countries, to be met with in the English Language, is in Moore's Travels to the Inland Parts of Africa, & his Extracts from curious Authors at the End of his Book.” Made for insertion to the Gentleman’s Magazine March 1740.

This Map has an early tape repair on the back that starts at the left center edge and extends to the "t" in the word "the" (left center), not noticeable on the front, plus two very expert 1" repairs to the bottom edge map on the fold lines. Map has 3 original fold lines and an untrimmed left border. Overall, highly detailed and boldly printed having nice eye appeal, good size, and is excellent for display.
