1740 Hand-Colored Engraved Map of Colonial Era America
c. 1740, Hand-Colored Engraved Copper-Plate Map title, “CARTA GEOGRAFICA DELL AMERICA SETTENTRIONALE” by G. Albrizzi, Venice, Extremely Fine.
Engraved in Venice, in 1740, by Giambattista Albrizzi (1698-1777) and based upon the 1708 map by De L’Ise, this historic Map measures 19.25” x 14.5” well printed on fine quality period laid paper with a vignette at the upper left. It is nicely Hand-colored in watercolors and shows a very detailed depiction of early America. Titled, “Carta Geografica Dell America Settentrionale,“ the cartouche vignette shows Neptune being pulled to shore by Sea Serpents while riding on a clam shell, and includes the Great Lakes and a rendering of Baja California. The Mississippi River Valley and the Rio Grande are still very inaccurate, however there are lots of details including many Indian Tribes and early settlements west of the Mississippi. There are also many settlements depicted in Florida and along the Gulf as well as many settlements along the California Coast. The Pacific Northwest and west of the Upper Mississippi is left blank, unlike earlier maps, because of the lack of knowledge of the area. Single vertical fold in center with mounting remnants on verso. Overall, this Map is in excellent condition (a pencil notation in the lower right corner with the date 1740) and has choice eye appeal for display.
