1739-E<SOU M> French Colonies Sou Marque VG Details, Corroded, NCS. Breen-455, V-77a, extremely rare (Vlack R.8). This variety is distinguished by the presence of a stop after ET on the reverse, and while it certainly appears to be present, the corrosion on the surface is such that this may be an illusion. The glossy walnut-brown surfaces have a consistent wood-grain texture. No silvering is evident, but the legends and types are bold for the assigned VG grade. Produced at the Tours mint in France, the heart symbol for Mint Director Pierre Petiteau is visible at 6 o'clock on the reverse, the E mintmark is opposite at 6 o'clock. Numerous mints operated in France during this era. Listed on page 51 of the 2006 Guide Book.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
