1723 FARTH Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver MS63 PCGS
1723 FARTH Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver MS63 PCGS. DEI.GRATIA.REX, close DEI GRATIA. Breen-173, "Very rare." Copper-alloy Hibernia farthings are plentiful by the standards of early American coinage, even in Uncirculated grades. The silver farthings are rare, however. Their intended purpose is unknown, but certainly they were not designed to circulate. They were struck in silver to show off the designs to their best advantage, perhaps to curry favor with the English court. This lovely piece has attractive ocean-blue, apple-green, and golden-brown borders. The prooflike fields and well struck devices are largely untoned. A minor retained lamination on the reverse at 4 o'clock and a slender strike-through near the mouth are both mint-made. Listed on page 42 of the 2007 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
