1723 FARTH Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver MS63 PCGS
1723<FARTH> Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver MS63 PCGS. Breen-173, Low R.6. This is the rare silver composition piece from the 1723 Hibernia farthing dies with DEI GRATIA closely spaced as usually seen on the copper examples of this date. This example is perfectly centered with nearly full border denticles on each side. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are sharply defined with bold detailing on the king's hair, and full, individually separated harp strings on the reverse. Attractive rose toning is seen on the obverse with occasional dabs of cobalt-blue around the margin, while the reverse is mostly gray-lilac with an undertone of rose and deep blue around the periphery. Breen mentioned a small hoard of about 20 examples found in England in 1971. In addition to those 20, an additional limited quantity were previously known, although we suspect that less than 30 examples are known altogether. Listed on page 42 of the 2007 Guide Book.
