1723<FARTH> Hibernia Farthing, D:G:REX--Double Struck--MS63 Brown PCGS. Breen-169, Nelson-6. This is Breen's First Prototype Farthing, described by Nelson as a pattern. In either event, it is certainly scarcer than the usual 1723 Farthing with DEI GRATIA REX legend. A lovely golden-brown piece with smooth surfaces and a few wisps of mahogany toning on the left sides. Double struck, the first strike was correctly centered, the second strike is about 5% off center toward 1:30. Both sides exhibit obvious evidence of the initial strike, particularly on GEORGIUS, HIBERNIA, and the king's profile. A wonderful combination of quality and scarcity, and an important mint error on an Early American Copper. Listed on page 42 of the 2006 Guide Book.
Ex: Paramount's session of Auction '82 (8/1982), lot 1515.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
