1723<1/2P> Hibernia Halfpenny XF45 PCGS. Breen-157. The Small 3 has a closed lower loop. In his Encyclopedia, Walter Breen noted that there are exactly 108 individual die varieties of this issue. While we are not quite sure where he came up with such a precise number of varieties, we do agree that there are many minor variations. For example, the obverse of this coin has the upper hair ribbon aligned with the G in GEORGIUS, and it has the harpist's head centered below A in HIBERNIA. On the other B-157 in this sale, the upper hair ribbon is level with I and the harpist's head is right of the A. Perhaps a variety guide could be compiled by the focused specialist. A trace of charcoal toning is present near the central reverse, otherwise this modestly circulated representative possesses deep golden-brown color. King George has a few wispy marks. Advanced die crumbling (as made) affects the harp strings and the obverse field and legends.
