1722<PENNY> Rosa Americana Penny, UTILE MS63 Brown NGC. Breen-118. This variety has an obviously doubled date and was recorded as "Extremely rare" by Walter Breen in his Encyclopedia. Nearly complete remnants of the original 722 are visible between the other digits, with the date now reading 1772222. This well struck and unabraded UTILE DULCI Penny has toned deep olive-brown, although the center of rose has lighter salmon color. Similar spots appear elsewhere, including on King George's eyebrow, and these all represent very careful removed or diminished corrosion. Made of a composition called Bath metal, these pieces are essentially brass and tended to corroded quickly. Listed on page 41 of the 2006 Guide Book.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
