STAR WARS: PANASONIC COMMERCIAL (1988) - Pair of Hand-Painted Ralph McQuarrie Sparky Concept Artworks - Two Sparky concept artworks hand-painted by renowned concept illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for a series of Star Wars-themed Panasonic commercials. Beginning in 1988, franchise creator George Lucas appeared with R2-D2 and a new creation, a genius talking robot named Sparky, in ads promoting Panasonic's high-tech Maclord videocassette players. At the specific request of Panasonic president Masaharu Matsushita, Sparky was designed by McQuarrie, whose concept designs for the original trilogy resulted in some of the most iconic and futuristic characters, sets, and technologies in modern science-fiction.

These two artworks, one of Sparky wearing the glasses seen in the commercials and one without, are both rendered in mixed media on vellum. Watercolors exhibit having bled through both sheets, and the glasses artwork features a paint splotch on the top edge. Dimensions: (each) 8.5" x 11" (21.75 cm x 28 cm)

Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.

Estimate: $2,000 - 4,000
