Impressive Design Hand-Wrought Early Iron Halberd Head
16th century, Hand-Wrought Iron Pike / Spear Halberd Head, measures about 10.75” long including its 8” long Spear Tip, with Two Side-Hooks 5” wide, Very Fine.
This rare design halberd head has an additional iron crosspiece with hooks on either side that slides over the central Spear tip, making it 5” wide. The iron surfaces have a naturally darkened patina from age and the Spear tip is still mostly “silvery” and has a slight bend either being as made or from use. On the side of the lower socket is a iron strap which would have been pounded into the wooden handle, instead of typically using a nail, to hold it securely. This design type is known to have been used to defend Castles against attacking enemy soldiers and against mounted Cavalry. This type is illustrated in several references. Provenance: Consignor’s research finds that this pike head was likely actually used during the Siege of Edinburgh Castle, Scotland in the year 1573.
