16th century manuscript of Pope Clement VIII's decree regarding the codification of religious rituals and sacraments. Dated 10 February 1596, Latin document is signed by M. Vestrius Barbianus and by Joseph Spada. Manuscript translates in part, ''...the forms of singing the hours and saying the mass by Paul V are the forms to be used...Pontifical ceremonies and all ecclesiastical rites are to be said in a similar way, according to tradition. Other corrupt and changed ceremonies and rites which are not recognized, especially because of negligence, printing errors, obscurity of text, and various other causes are to not be used, and must be corrected or dismissed...'' With an ink notation to verso reading, ''Constitutio Clementis Papa viii, / In Pontificali Romano''. Document runs 6pp. on both sides of 4 leaves. Measures 8.25 x 11'', and bound together with a thread spine. Near fine given age.
