(1694)<TOKEN> London Elephant Token, Diagonals XF40 PCGS. Breen-185, Hodder 1-A. Thin planchet. Breen considered this variety "Very Rare" in 1988 when he released his epic Encyclopedia, and it remains so today, in relation to the more often encountered No Diagonals variety (Hodder 2-B). The obverse die also differs, the tusks are further from the rim than on the usual Hodder 2 obverse, where the tusks nearly touch the dentils. This chocolate-brown example has moderate wear in the centers, but the diagonals are still evident. There are no relevant marks or verdigris. Listed on page 44 of the 2006 Guide Book.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
