(1692-1700) Recoined Sol VF Details, Corroded, NCS. GD-91. The undertype appears to be an 1/8 ecu of Henry IV who reigned from 1589-1610 (KM #23), the overtype appears to be a 15 Deniers of Louis XIV (KM #285.22). The confused devices and legends from the two different designs make exact attribution quite a challenge. A fleur-de-lis counterstamp in the obverse center revalues the piece again, perhaps as a Sol. This silver-gray piece has one major and three minor edge flaws, as made. A few flecks of green verdigris near the counterstamp, and the obverse field has a few wispy pinscratches. A brief discussion of these pieces appeared in The French Billon Coinages in the Americas by Robert Vlack, published in 2004.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
