(1688) TOKEN American Plantations Token MS62 PCGS. Breen-77 or 78. Newman 4-E. A choice specimen without any significant "tin pest" that so often plagues this issue. No other problems either, and a very nice specimen of one of the earliest authorized coins for the North American colonies. (Tin is an unusual metal that changes form from the solid form of most metals to another type of solid that easily turns to powder. The change happens more at low temperatures, so the fact that most of the American population between 1688 and now have lived without central heat in places that get cold probably explains the high incidence of tin pest.) These dies were prepared in the 1680s, but this specimen may have been among those restruck by Matthew Young in 1828. Nicer specimens of this variety are often assumed to be restrikes but there is no definitive way to distinguish originals of this variety from restrikes. Listed on page 20 of the 2003 Guide Book.
