<B>1686 Map of </B></I><B><I>Mexico or New Spain</B></I></B></I> , 6.75" x 8". Colored engraved map by Frenchman Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) published in Frankfort in 1686. Figure 23 from a German book, titled at top: "<I>Mexica oder Neu Spannien</B></I>." Vignettes of an Indian battle in "<I>Louisiane</B></I>" and a raging sea battle in the "<I>Mer du Sud Pacifique</B></I>." "<I>Nouveau Mexique</B></I>" is the area north of Mexico. "<I>Californie</B></I>" is at the left (Baja California). "<I>Floride</B></I>" is where Texas is located with an unnamed river separating it from Mexico. Incredibly, the area which is today the United States resembles the light green area north of pink-colored Mexico depicted in this map printed over 320 years ago! Browned at upper edge, minor soiling.
