1684-1686 The Observator Collection of 60 Issues 1684-1686 [I]The Observator
1684-1686 The Observator Collection of 60 Issues. Published by Sir Roger L'Estrange in London from 1681-1687 and given financial support by King Charles II of England, the Observator was a propaganda vehicle for Tory ideology. Printed in double columns on both sides of the 8" x 14" sheet and using a nice variety of typefaces, the paper didn't present the news in the standard format of the London Gazette. Instead, it commented on the events of the day in the form of a dialogue between "Trimmer" (a Whig) and "Observator" (a Tory) with the latter always presenting the superior argument. This technique makes it interesting for present day readers.

Offered in this lot are 60 issues of this fascinating early newspaper. The dates range from June 18, 1684 (Vol. 2 Number 82) to September 11, 1686 (Vol. 3 Number 208) and they are all in great condition save for five issues with tiny wormholes in the right margin. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
