(1670-75) FARTH St. Patrick Farthing, Silver VF Deta (1670-75)[FARTH] St. Patrick Farthing, Silver V
<B>(1670-75)<FARTH> St. Patrick Farthing, Silver VF Details, Damaged, NCS.</B></I> Breen-210, "Very rare." Dies medallically oriented. From the same dies as the Silver Farthing offered in our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Auction, lot 5007; a colon precedes REX with no other punctuation. .In the past, some have called this issue a pattern, however, it is likely that the intended purpose was for use in circulation, perhaps as a shilling. Regardless of the original purpose, few examples survive today and nearly all are well worn or damaged. The number of surviving silver St. Patrick's pieces is not specifically known, although the Norweb Collection contained four and the Ford Collection contained three others. Several different die layouts exist, mostly differing in punctuation. This glossy piece displays light aquamarine and plum hues. A cut is concealed on the king's backside, a horizontal pinscratch is noted at 3 o'clock, and recessed surface at 12 and 3 o'clock on the reverse are also visible. The devices are sharp, however, with the harp strings, church, and banished dragon all clear.
