STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Pair of Hand-Drawn Ralph McQuarrie C-3PO Leg and Torso Concept Sketches - Two C-3PO leg and torso concept sketches hand-drawn by production illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Loyal protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) accompanied Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on his quest to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the clutches of the Empire.

McQuarrie, who is credited alongside Lucas for the origins of Threepio, originally based the look of the droid on the robot Maria from Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis, although the character ultimately seen on screen was both more masculine and less human-looking in the style of Gort from Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still. These early sketches, one depicting C-3PO's jointed legs in slight profile and one depicting his torso and bottom from the left side, were rendered in graphite on paper circa mid-1975.

The profile sketch also appears on page 27 of the Abrams publication Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie, while the torso sketch appears on page 82. Both appear to have been torn from a larger sheet of paper and exhibit crinkling. Dimensions: (largest) 6" x 17" (15.25 cm x 43.25 cm)

Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000
