1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence AU53 PCGS. Small Dat 1662[2PENCE] Oak Tree Twopence AU53 PCGS.
1662<2PENCE> Oak Tree Twopence AU53 PCGS. Small Date. Noe-30, Crosby 1-A2, R.4. Small 1 and 2 in date. All of the 1662 Twopence, Noe-29 through 34, were struck from the same pair of dies, and are conveniently categorized as Small Date or Large Date varieties. Noe 29, 30, and 31 were struck first, then the reverse die was reengraved to create the Large Date varieties, Noe-32 through 34. This variety is an intermediate state, with a break from the digit 2 to a bead (absent on Noe-29), but without the horizontal break above the digit 2 as on Noe-31. A magnificent example of the variety, since the olive-gray surfaces are smooth, and the devices and legends are evenly and crisply struck. Thorough evaluation beneath a loupe locates a couple of brief and nearly invisible pinscratches. Well centered on the obverse, the reverse is slightly off center toward 6 o'clock, although all legends are fully intact. Mildly wavy near the date, as made from rocker dies. Certain to hold a place of honor within an advanced Massachusetts silver collection. Finer than at least two of the three coins in the Andrew Hain Collection.
