<B>1660 Copperplate Engraving- The Holy Bible Title Page.</B></I> A beautiful and majestic elephant folio title page from the 1660 reissue of John Field's large King James folio of 1659 "…illustrated with Chorographical Sculps by J. Ogilby." John Field was printer to the University of Cambridge and Vice-Chancellor John Worthington sponsored his Bible in order to ensure the supply of a well-printed edition of the Bible for use in churches or libraries. John Ogilby, a bookseller and publisher specializing is illustrated works, bought up most of the edition and added illustrations making this edition a large and quite expensive book, costing as much as £25 unbound. It was one of the most impressive and authoritative printings of the period and was published in time to be presented to King Charles II upon his restoration to the throne on May 29, 1660.<BR><BR>This general title page, designed by Diepenbeck and engraved by Lombart, is in the architectural style and presents King Solomon on his throne surrounded by lions and his subjects. Moses, Abraham, Aaron, and King David are also pictured. Interestingly, Moses is shown with horns based on a mistranslation by Jerome of Exodus 34:29 where the Hebrew word <I>qaran</B></I> was translated "horns" instead of "to emit rays." Titles are underlined and borders added in contemporary red ink. This leaf has a sight size of 10.75" x 16.25" and is matted in museum board to and overall 14.25" x 19.75".
