(1659)<6PENCE> Lord Baltimore Sixpence XF45 NGC. Crosby Pl. III, 2, Breen-68, Hodder 2-B. Small Head. Pastel shades of gold and pink patina grace this desirable Colonial issue, which was struck during the same era as the better-known Massachusetts silver pieces. The Maryland coinage rights of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, were questioned by Cromwell's regime in 1659, but apparently Calvert persevered since his coins circulated briefly in Maryland. This charming example has relatively unabraded surfaces, although portions of the left side are softly struck. Many design elements are crisp, however, and ample luster emerges when the piece is rotated beneath a light. As seen on other examples, russet-brown freckles cling to the peripheral letters. The present piece is the sole NGC-certified Lord Baltimore sixpence, as of (6/06). Listed on page 38 of the 2007 Guide Book.
