1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet MS65 NG
1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet MS65 NGC. With pellets at trunk. Noe-1, Crosby 12-I, R.2. 73.9 grains. This is an amazing Gem quality example from the famous John Ford Collection. It is a gorgeous piece with olive-gold color and splashes of deep steel toning. Not perfectly round, although most of the border pellets are visible. The flan is wavy as always on original examples of the Massachusetts silver coinage. The lower obverse has prominent clash marks below the tree and through the peripheral letters from 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock. The reverse has light die cracks through the date and denomination with a heavy internal cud connecting the tops of 16 in the date. This piece was plated by Noe in his reference at plate VI, f.
The Noe-1 variety is among the most common of the Pine Tree shillings, seemingly available in higher grades than most others. These pieces were also well-made and usually present a most attractive appearance. In the Ford catalog, Michael Hodder wrote: "Noe 1's were well made on nice, smooth and large flans. This is the best variety choice for a colonial type collector, for it has the classic look of Massachusetts silver." Combining the quality of production with the aesthetic desirability of this piece yields a coin that will easily please the connoisseur of colonial coinage.
Ex: F.C.C. Boyd; John J.
