1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet AU53 PCGS. 70.5 grains. Noe-5, R.4. This variety is most easily attributed by the die break on the reverse that crosses the M in DOM from the outer circle of beads past the inner beaded border. Struck on a slightly wavy planchet, as often seen, the central device of the pine tree is especially sharp in its definition as is the date and denomination on the reverse. The surfaces are light gray overall and the devices are somewhat off center. This coin has a feature that has afforded two of us (MVW and Warren Tucker) considerable interest and discussion. It appears that an off center brockage was used as a planchet for this coin. If the lower obverse rim is carefully examined a backward N and an M are apparent. However, these letters are incuse, which leads us to believe that the obverse was originally struck as a brockage. The minter most likely viewed this as a spoiled coin and reinserted it in the dies as a planchet. However, because the struck coin was off center in the opposite direction from the brockage, several of the letters from the brockage are still apparent. A fascinating coin and a piece that should be of even greater interest to the collector because of this striking anomaly. Listed on page 18 of the 2003 Guide Book.
