Double struck, with the initial strike several degrees off center toward 12 o'clock. On the obverse, the first impression of an A is obvious at 12 o'clock, and an N from the first pass through the dies is noted on the reverse at 6 o'clock. Clearly, the coiner was unhappy with the first strike, and deliberately struck it a second time, with sufficient force to obliterate most evidence of the initial impression. This piece has a straightened bend between 9 and 12 o'clock, and the NE in NEW is partly flattened. The tree, date, denomination, and more than half of the legends are bold. Medium tan and dove-gray toning adds to its charm. Listed on page 37 of the 2007 Guide Book.
