1652 Pine Tree Sixpence AU55 PCGS
1652 6PENCE Pine Tree Sixpence AU55 PCGS. Pellets at trunk. Crosby 1-A, Noe-33, R.3. 30.6 gn. A glossy sea-green and steel-gray example with bold problem-free surfaces. The piece has a wavy appearance, as made. Numismatists once believed a bent sixpence was used by superstitious Puritans to ward off witches, but it is now known that a rocker press curved the pieces as they were struck.
Like all examples of Noe-33, the obverse is misaligned toward 12 o'clock, taking several letters in MASATHVSETS off the flan but in return allowing full legends and beads throughout the lower obverse. The prominent vertical die break just left of the 6 in the date is also usual for the variety, but the short diagonal break near the N in IN indicates a later die state. Listed on page 24 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 6 in 55, 4 finer (1/08).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
