1652HILNG Oak Tree Shilling MS62 NGC. Noe-4, R.4. 74.6 grains per Hain catalog; 74.8 grains per NGC. Coin number 35 in the 1991 ANS Exhibition of Massachusetts silver coinage. This is a pleasing example with good centering on the obverse and excellent centering on the reverse. The surfaces have attractive medium gray color with hints of lilac and gold. The obverse legend is nearly complete, and is only slightly cropped near 6 o'clock. The reverse legend is full. A minor rim disturbance at 12 o'clock on the obverse positively identifies this as the Hain specimen. In the Hain catalog, the cataloger for Stack's noted "The presently offered coin is superior to the Norweb piece, as well as the Stearns, NN 60th, Picker's (which had a bit more obverse lettering showing, which is why he kept it), and the MHS coin." This is the usual die state for the variety with minor reverse die cracks, most prominent near ND-stop-A. This is an outstanding example for the advanced colonial specialist.
Ex: Spink & Son (London); Vlack Collection; Hain Collection (Stack's, 1/2002), lot 19. Lot:5002
