1652 3PENCE Oak Tree Threepence MS62 NGC
1652 3PENCE Oak Tree Threepence MS62 NGC. Noe-23, Crosby 1-A1, R.6. 14.4 grains. Backward S's. All three S's in MASATHVSETS are backward, and this feature is diagnostic for the variety. The plate coin in the Noe reference and also plated by Wurtzbach in the photographic record of his collection, this amazing example appears to be the second finest known Noe-23. Pedigreed to the most impressive Massachusetts collections formed in the 20th century, Wurtzbach described it as a Gem Uncirculated piece that cannot be improved. For comparison, the remarkable Hain Family collection had but one piece of Noe-23, graded just Very Fine.
Not perfectly centered with the die edge prominently displayed at 6 o'clock on each side and more prominently visible on the reverse. Both sides are deep gray with hints of lighter silver luster and traces of iridescent toning, truly remarkable quality. The tree is bold and complete, as are the date and denomination. Although a little soft, the lettering on both sides is entirely present and fully readable.
Despite the listing of multiple Noe varieties, only two die pairs were utilized for the coinage of all six recorded numbers. The Noe-23 variety was the first Oak Tree threepence coined, with multiple recuttings of the obverse die to create Noe-24 through Noe-27. The other variety with normal S's is Noe-28. Listed on page 36 of the 2008 Guide Book.
Ex: DeWitt Smith; Virgil Brand; Carl Wurtzbach; T. James Clarke; F.C.C. Boyd; John J.
