Host Coin of Francois I (ruled 1515-1547), Vlack 1f Type - 1640 countermark on a Francois I Douzain aux Salamandres et la pettite croix, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy Unlisted, Sombart 4348. First type, struck circa 1540, at the Rouen Mint (B mintmark). Host coin and countermark Very Fine, a very well struck example with sharp design details and nearly full legends on either side. The host coin is curiously unlisted in either Ciani or Duplessy, though Sombart lists it as being struck at some 16 different mints! Unusual in the douzain series in that each side carries the mintmark – here the letter “B” – at the base of the shield on the obverse and the base of the cross on the reverse. The countermark is on the reverse, causing just a little flattening opposite on the obverse as expected, though the curious salamanders to each side of the shield are visible, as are the pair in the fields of the cross on the reverse. A rare host coin type for a 1640 countermark, and nearly as difficult to find as a regular issue – Sombart reports just 5 examples found for this year and mint.
