Host Coin of Henri II (ruled 1547-1559), Vlack 1g Type - 1640 countermark on a 1553-A [Paris Mint] Henri II Douzain aux Deux H, Ciani 1312, Duplessy 999, Sombart 4386. Very Fine, a boldly struck example of this rare, two-year type coin (struck only in Paris, only in 1553 and again in 1555, with the first year having a mintage of just over 40,000). The legends are strong and the date is bold; the mintmark is a shade weaker at the base of the shield, but visible, and the countermark is placed on the obverse side. The coin is a pleasing golden hue, the surfaces hard and with minimal marks from circulation. While the issues of Henri II are not rare overall, there are individual types that are extremely difficult to find. Sombart notes that he was only able to find just 5 examples of the 1553 issue (and 12 of the 1555), making for an extremely rare host coin in its own right – few are likely to exist with the 1640 countermark applied, and fewer still in this level of condition. Another example that the specialist would do well to note.
