1577 - René de Birague, Chancellor of France and Cardinal from 1578
Born in Milan, his birth name was Renato Birago. His biography is fascinating, but too rich and complicated to even begin to summarize here.Suffice it to say that he was a most important figure in the courts of sixteenth century France. This medal has every appearance of being an original striking, though there is one major die crack, on the reverse at 3 o'clock. Condition is Choice AU or better, with traces of peripheral lustre on both sides. Copper, 40 mm, 28.0 grams. Obverse: RENATVS BIRAGVS FRANCIAE CANCEL Bare headed bust, right, in what appears to be an ermine collar red robe, In exergue: 1577 Reverse ORTV CLARVS SINE DOLO in center, lamb of Christ holding tall cross and looking back. From a surrounding circle, rays and spikes to another circle, then the legend. A most impressive piece, no doubt quite scarce if not rare.
