154: A Pre-Columbian Maya Miniature Orangeware Vessel
In the form of a decorated, necked jar from Guatemala, circa 600 A.D. – 1000 A.D. This example measures about 2 ½” tall by about 2 ½” wide and exhibits an attractive orange and cream-colored surface with embossed panels. This vessel emulates in miniature form the shape of much larger Maya vessels known from the same region and period. The quality suggests it was fired at a high temperature. It has a bulbous body with a decorative, scalloped edge that rises to a slender neck with a flaring rim. The embossed panels feature bird-like, reptilian-like heads that may be associated with the Maya deity Chak.

Provenance: Former Indiana, USA collection.
