150: A Pre-Columbian Olmecoid Figural Vessel
From the ancient Pacific coast regions of Guatemala and El Salvador, ca. 1000 - 500 B.C. This vessel measures 2 ½” wide by about 2 ¼” tall and is in the form of a small, necked jar with an incorporated figure showing Olmec features. The figure’s features exhibit essential characteristics associated with Olmec figurines from roughly the same time period in adjacent regions, but are shown with a distinct stylistic variation known for Pre-Classic objects from this region. The figure is shown as obese, with a plump, fleshy face that is impressively modeled to show puffy eyes, fat cheeks and full lips. The eyes feature perforations for pupils, while punctate and incised decoration portrays the figure’s hair.

Provenance: Former Indiana, USA collection.
