Letter from Orlando C. Geer of the 14th Ohio Infantry, Company A. Written in ink and datelined ''Louisville, Ky. Feby 26th 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''…Dear Sister…I would gladly be at home and see you before we go farther South which will in all probability be tomorrow. But as for living at home again that is impossible as long as my parents are displeased because I enlisted and still hold a grudge or still entertain ill feelings toward me because I did not go and ask them their consent…I knew they would oppose it and rather than be stubbornly opposed I went and enlisted as I would certainly do again if opportunity as urgent as the defense of our Union…I hope…I am mistaken…but if the contrary were the case I should suppose they would write…There has been considerable strife between the 14th and 10th Indiana in marching ever since we left Somerset. For the last three days we came 23 miles each day…Tomorrow I suppose we leave in Boats down the Ohio to go down the Missip. There is talk of our being paid off tomorrow but…we were going to be paid off every day since we left Somerset…I will be obliged to close as we marched 24 miles today and be very tired…I presume the war will soon close. Well I am glad of it but I want to see the Rebels whipped out before I leave the Service. I expect we will see good times going down the Ohio…'' Geer mustered into Company A on 19 August 1861 and mustered out on 11 July 1865 as a Sergeant. The 14th Ohio saw action at Corinth, Perryville, Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3.5pp. Light edgewear, including small chips, and one small hole to center fold, otherwise excellent condition.
