Letter from Corporal Orlando C. Geer of the 14th Ohio Infantry, Company A, to his sister. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp Calbert KY Nov 3rd, 1861,'' letter reads in part: ''…I rec'd the papers and letter from you and am very thankful for this act of kindness. It was the only letter that I have got from our folks. You must not take pattern from their neglegence but you must improve every available advantage and write by yourself and stick a short note in every letter…that you have a chance. I wrote to Amos the day I received yours. I also got the Bundle of things Jno. A. Moore sent by Capt. Kingsbury which came. Tell Father that I am not sick of my bargain as he predicted but on the contrary I rather like it so far. If you could send some writing paper and some stamped envelopes or some stamps. Be attentive to your books this winter and see what progress you can make. I wish you could go to writing school. Give my love to all our folks and…bear in mind that I think of you every day. From your loving Brother…'' Geer mustered into Company A on 19 August 1861 and mustered out on 11 July 1865 as a Sergeant. The 14th Ohio saw action at Corinth, Perryville, Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and throughout the Atlanta Campaign. 2pp. letter measures 5'' x 8''. Near fine condition.
