ALS from Benjamin Frank O'Bryon of the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry, who was KIA at Totopotomoy. Written in ink and datelined ''White A Station / Balttemore County Md / Nov 8th 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''…Dear Wife…I want you not to go to any extra trouble about get me any things But…if yarn is not to high I wish you would send me a pair of good socks or two I will not get the Boots at present for I know under the present circumstances, stand us on pains to use iconomy…as I can get my money I intend to send it home as soon as I can get it it is reported that we are to be paied of next week But I think it is very uncertain how that will be But I don't think it will be long So keep up your Spirits up and I think every thing will come right yet I want you to tell me the womans name who is so much of a secessionist. I don't think much of her. If you can procure paper with the drafted men you can send it It is now growing late and must bring this to a close I have some more things I wish to write but have not time so give my compliments to all enquiring friends abe moore is better and the boys have a good time…There is some novelty in a soldiers life you may rest assured of that in regard to Sis…I suppose she thought old Wilkinson could not do her justice…She had no business with that old chap in the first place…'' O'Bryon mustered into Company E on 22 August 1862 and was killed in action at Totopotomoy Creek on 31 May 1864. Before his death, the regiment saw action at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. 3pp. letter shows scattered soiling and damp staining, as well as separation at creases. Good condition.
