4pp. letter from John W. Shepard of the 13th Indiana Infantry, Company E. Dated 17 January 1865, letter reads in part: ''…yet alive. have been in Camp 9 days this evening in a small tent made of logs…2 of us Eat together and cook in the stove…We have 3 or 4 plates, cups plenty, pork, salt Beef, and some days fresh Beef…We can get…Christian papers every day. I have more papers than I can read…I went to Church…last Sabbath for the first time since I left. There is prayer meeting every night. I think I shall go tonight. My health is improving although exertion makes my heart beat so. I was about Starved when I came here…There has been a grand Review today. Saw more Soldiers than I ever did. There is a great rejoicing today. Shooting musketry, and offal Yelling…over the capture of ft. fisher in N.C. that our Boys failed to take the first trip they made…'' Shepard mustered into Company E on 12 November 1864 and was mustered out on 5 September 1865 at Goldsboro, North Carolina. During his service, the regiment saw duty in the Shenandoah Valley and at Fort Marshall in Baltimore, Maryland. Pencil letter measures approximately 4.5'' x 7.75''. Overall toning and soiling; some separation at folds, otherwise very good condition.
