ALS from David Hall of the 139th Illinois Infantry, Company G. Letter datelined ''Camp Lyon / Peoria May 21st 1864'' reads in part: ''…I have time to drop you a single line by Sergeant Chapman who leaves for home on Furlough this morning. I am still feeling first rate and…enjoy camp life very much. After getting into our bunks last night I felt so comfortable that I told my comrades that when I got home I should prepare to fix up my bunk in our cow shed and enjoy sleeping where I could have air…We are getting along firmly in the organization of the company. There were several companies on the ground when we arrived here, one from Peoria. And we have got the start of them all and our company is the first one organized…you will wish to know when we shall leave but I cannot tell you. Three companies came into camp yesterday…and it will take some little time to organize the different companies and then the regiment. Did Freddie get the hard tack that I sent him…'' Hall mustered into Company G on 1 June 1864 and mustered out on 28 October 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. A 100-day regiment, the 139th Infantry passed its three month term serving garrison duty in Cairo. When its term expired, the regiment stayed on an additional two months to participate in defeating Price's Raid of Missouri. 2pp. ink letter measures 5'' x 8''. Minor foxing, otherwise excellent.
